Dear Family,
Wow, what a week. It has been quite the culture shock to come down to Gent, Belgium. In Flemish (pronounced Hent). G's don't exist here. Ok next, My companion is Elder Larson. He is a really great guy. He represents San Diego, California. He will hit his 4 month mark in a week. Hard worker!
Gent is so interesting. Belgium seems more like Europe as Nederland had a more of a modern feel to it. Nonetheless, Gent is beautiful. There is a castle right in the middle of the city and super old buildings all around. When I arrived, I learned that we had nothing currently to work with so we are building from the ground up with investigators. The Branch President said that the branch was about 30 people and they needed help in many aspects. Thus, this is a transfer of building a ward! We're excited to work with and strengthen members while bringing more people unto Christ. Oh boy! Christmas is soon! I will have to send my package out next week. Unfortunately, I am very low on money due to the train passage this far south. Reimbursements come soon. Flemish is hilarious. I love it. It has a bit of french words thrown in and the accent sounds completely Irish. It's like fast, soft, slurred Irish-Dutch with a few adopted French words. I will try to send pictures as soon as I can. I'll probably have to mail a card home this time around.
I was sorry to hear about all the attacks on the church. That's too bad that Christians feel the need to attack people. At least we know what we believe. Just keep being examples. They'll look at you and think, "How are they not Christian?" But in fact, we are. Tell Paige she is awesome for sticking up for the church. Hope you are all having a wonderful week! I love you!
Love, Elder Schulte
